I have spoken to thousands of entrepreneurs, in hundreds of different settings, and there is always a few things that I notice with the mindset of the successful ones vs the ones who don’t make it or even worse those who find themselves plateaued somewhere.  There are 10 simple choices you can make to have a dramatic impact on your business and life…. how many have you CHOSEN correctly on?

Here are 10 ways YOU can CHOOSE to be better:

1. CHOOSE courage over fear

Courage is often said to be a distinct lack of fear.  I believe that no matter what, fear will always be there.  The difference is that we can learn to overcome it.  We can CHOOSE to master that fear and not let it control what we do any more.  When we choose to do this, we can become more courageous and do more courageous things in our business and life.  No matter what the outcome is of what you do, you will still learn something from the experience that will make you a better person or make your business better.

So CHOOSE to have courage in all aspects of your life rather than FEAR!

2. CHOOSE to believe in yourself.

How you CHOOSE to believe about yourself says a lot about what you will accomplish in life.  Your attitude about yourself is the number one thing that will prevent you from getting where you need to go.  I recently had an amazing experience to write down a couple of the fears I had about myself and where I wanted to go, on a thick board (it seemed really thick when I wrote them on it anyways).  I then planted my feet, took a deep breath, and CHOSE to BREAK the board!  It seems like such a small thing, to break a board, but that feeling of my primal self, setting that goal and achieving it was EMPOWERING!  It helped me make a few decisions that I have been hesitating to make because I lacked the belief in myself.  It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you WANT TO and when you believe in yourself enough to!

You can CHOOSE to believe in yourself or not.  However since it’s your choice… why not choose the positive!

3. CHOOSE good company.

We have all heard that saying that you are the sum of the 6 people you spend the most time with.  I am happy to say that every day I wake up the people I surround myself with are constantly challenging me to be better.  They are pushing me upwards and onwards.  They are making sure that I am the best version of who I can be.  I know too many people that are surrounded by losers.  Yes losers.  The kind of people that have a vested interest in keeping you where you are and preventing you from leaving them because they are scared.

The toxicity from one negative person is all it takes to demoralize an entire army, imagine what it will do if it’s just a few friends?!?!

Take stock of those you CHOOSE to give your time to and why.  You may find a change is in order…

4. CHOOSE your own goals

Business is all about goals.  Set those goals and track your progress towards them.  Every decision you make should be a choice that brings that goal closer to completion.  When you have chosen and set the goals you will find that you are MUCH more motivated to go reach them.

I had a job in the past in which every quarter when we looked at our “goals” for the quarter of what we wanted to achieve, the company provided many “goals” for us.  I always said that this makes no sense.  I get that the company has goals it wants us to hit, but this is an exercise of what I… ME…. MYSELF want to do, not what the company wants.  Inevitably I did my best to make sure I wasn’t behind, but I never gave those “goals” my all.  They weren’t mine or things I wanted for myself so the motivation to achieve them was never there.

Why not CHOOSE your goals for yourself.  You will grow faster, and expand your comfort zone each and every day you do that!

5. CHOOSE to have purpose and vision.

Picture and imagine the business you want, what does it look like, what are you spending your time on, where are you living, who are you with… Go ahead and close your eyes and picture that in yourself right now.

One of a few things will happen… For those of you who couldn’t complete this simple exercise you need to seriously think about what you want out of your business and life.  If you can’t visualize then you don’t know WHY you’re working towards your goals.

For the rest of you who could visualize that, you are on the right track.  You have something in your mind.  You have a purpose and the vision to achieve that purpose.  Now that you have that picture in your mind, it’s something to work towards.

Recently I had the privilege of being involved in a bootcamp for teenagers to learn many things that they don’t teach in school, like having vision and purpose, understanding how money works, how to be a gentleman or a lady, and many other things, the teens were challenged to create vision boards.  Cutting out of magazines the things that they wanted for later in their life.  This is a practice that can be beneficial even for adults.  Take that vision you just had and create a vision board from it.  Share your vision board on social media or wherever else.  You may be surprised at the result 🙂

CHOOSE your purpose and the vision that purpose creates.  Then go get it!

6. CHOOSE challenge instead of complacency

The road less taken is almost always more rewarding.  When I was a teenager we climbed Mt. Baldy in New Mexico, 12,441 feet high.  We could have chosen to go during the day like everyone else did, but instead we chose to leave at 2am and hike through the pitch black of night to get to the top for the sunrise.  To this date I have yet to see anything so beautiful in my life.  The pure awe inspiring power of the sun, as it began for the day at just over 2 miles above the see was humbling.

So if you have the choice, why not challenge yourself.  The end result will always be better, either in the result or the growth from taking the harder path.

7. CHOOSE to be discerning.

Selectivity creates success. Not everything or everyone is going to be good for you or your business.  What’s the big picture?  What do you need right now to help you take one more step towards the vision you have set as your goal.

Be aware of the different repercussions of what you choose to do.  However don’t let this mindfulness be an anchor holding you from moving forward.

This is especially true of the people you choose to bring into your business.  Hire slow and fire fast.  I have seen what happens when you fill positions just to fill them so the “work can get done”.  This inevitably leads to more work, rework, upset customers, lost revenue, or worse down the road.

CHOOSE wisely as the grail knight from Indian Jones always says!

8. CHOOSE risks.

The only guarantee is that if you do nothing you will have nothing.  If you have chosen to go into business why not choose to take a bigger risk for the bigger payout.  If you wanted to play it safe you should have stayed with your 9-5 job and been happy that the risk was mitigated.

If you’re afraid to take risks then starting, building and running your own business is going to be a pretty miserable experience, as it’s always about choosing to risk what you have for something greater.

I don’t know about you… but I CHOOSE greatness, but to get it you need to RISK first.

9. CHOOSE Happiness.

“I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” – Steve Jobs

I don’t think I can add anything else to this.  CHOOSE what makes you happy, if it doesn’t then make a different choice.

10. CHOOSE gratitude in everything

One of my mentors Blair Singer helped me realize this, and I have been doing it with the teams I work with and the people I have surrounded myself with since then.  We have a LOT to be grateful for in our lives.  If you are reading this blog, then you have been given the chance to do so when so many others in the world are barely getting by.

If you woke up tomorrow and only had whatever you were grateful for in your life, how much would you have left?  An attitude of gratitude not only helps brighten other people’s days but it actually infects your own attitude.  It helps you realize what you really have.

I am getting better at it, but I try to wake up each day and go to sleep each night with a simple yet profound exercise.  I list out the things I am grateful for…. At least 5 things but ideally 10.  A funny thing happens when you do this… you start to become a happier person.  You start to realize there are SO many things you can be grateful for that it becomes hard to pick just a small handful.  That happiness infection spreads to others around you as well and before you know it you have positively impacted their lives as well.

You can CHOOSE to be grateful or take things for granted…. I think we both know there is only ONE right choice though…

There you have it… 10 simple CHOICES you can make to enhance your business and your life.  Now you only have one more choice to make… the choice to share this with everyone you know.  Please leave comments below about what you have chosen and tell at least 3 friends, business contacts, family members, neighbors, or whoever else you run into to read this blog.  Lastly I want to say THANK YOU, for taking the time to read this, share it, comment on it, and choose to spend your time on this blog.  You are the reason I do this, and the reason I continue to do it.  So THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.
